Transition Instructions
Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Misleading
By Timk on Nov 6, 2021
My cat has been on prescription cat food for over a year now & will continue to be for the rest of his life, evey month I have to go through the approval process which delays me getting the food on time before he runs out, another issue I have is the shipping, they claim 1-2 day shipping, try a week or or more, evey month I deal with this, since chewy is the only place I can get his diabetic food, I guess I guess I just have to deal with it, however customer service is great always get to talk to someone when I call

Only Diabetic Food My Cat Has Shown Interest In
By NattyJ on Nov 24, 2021
We purchased all of the different diabetic foods. He didn't like Purina or Royal Canin. When this arrived, my cat went up to the box and started meowing because he wanted me to open it. It is the only diabetic food he has shown any interest in.

Incredibly Thankful
By Merlin on Aug 25, 2021
I bought this product because our poor boy was suffering from diarrhea for two months and his liver was no longer processing his food. He has been on insulin for over three month and we were not instructed to change his diet. He was losing weight. He went from 21 pounds to 11 pounds. The food was just going through him. I called my niece who has worked for a vet for over 12 years and she asked if we put him on a diabetic diet. I told her we were not instructed to do so. She informed me that his liver was most likely shutting down and how important it is to start, and suggested Hills. I am so glad she did. He loves it, and the diarrhea is gone within two days. We will continue him on it. I highly I bought this product because our poor boy was suffering from diarrhea for two months and his liver was no longer processing his food. Seems to be helping my recently diagnosed with diabetes cat. The other 3 like it too. And my vet carries it and was the one to suggest it but didn't carry the larger size.

Food solution!
By catfan on Jun 26, 2021
I have a male cat around 9 years who had been getting increasingly ill, loosing weight and energy. Vet stated she thought he had diabetes. We tried first to see if we could control it with diet, and put him on this food. He loved the food immediately - refusing his old food. With in a week was acting better, 2 weeks his coat and eyes looked better, acting more like his old self. 3 weeks was running around the house and playing again. Check in with the vet showed he'd already regained a pound, there's a good chance just staying on the new food will be the right solution for him! Completely grateful

My cat likes it!
By Elizabeth on Aug 2, 2021
I was concerned about whether or not my cat would eat the prescription cat food (he is newly diagnosed with diabetes.). He took right to the new food and there's been no throwing up. I haven't been back to the vet, so I don't know if it and the insulin have reduced his blood sugars
